Evelyn Fay Manter was born October 29, 1920 to William E. and Erma Marks in the Vroman family homestead at Put-in-Bay, OH in the same room as was her mother. She left this life on December 19, 2016 at Otterbein North Shore assisted living Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio where she had been a resident since late September 2015. She grew up in Marion, Ohio and spent time in the summer at Put-in-Bay as a child. On December 18, 1942 she married Earl W. Manter, who preceded her in death. They resided at Green Camp, Ohio during their children's childhoods, and later moved to Prospect, Ohio. They bought property on South Bass Island which served as a summer retreat and later in retirement became their home. Evelyn attended Ohio University at Athens, Ohio where she met her husband, Earl. Besides being a mother, she spent some time as an elementary school teacher, her later teaching years being at Green Camp, Ohio. Evelyn enjoyed Girl Scouts as both a girl scout and leader. She was connected with that organization for at least 73 years. On South Bass Island she was a charter member of the OWLS book club. [Old Women's Literary Society] She had a great love of nature and was knowledgeable of various kinds of birds. She loved South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay. She had been a member of the Green Camp United Methodist Church and had in retirement years participated in St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Put-in-Bay. She enjoyed singing in the church choirs. She is survived by three children: Robert [Mary] Manter of Lakeside-Marblehead, OH; E. Frederick [Joan] Manter of Delaware, OH; Gwendolyn Manter of Ingleside, IL; seven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be set at a later date with burial on South Bass Island. Donations may be made to Otterbein North Shore, 9400 North Shore Blvd., Lakeside-Marblehead.
