Eva Jean Petersen, 92, of Catawba Island passed peacefully from this life at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital, Toledo, OH on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. She was born in Danbury Twp., Ohio, the daughter of the late Eugene and Eva Henrietta (Barnholt) Vollmer and graduated from Danbury High School. On Feb. 24, 1940 she married Richard N. Petersen, who preceded her in death in 1980. Catawba's Orchardside Motel was her creation and career. She began her business in 1956 and operated it every summer until closing in 2009. In 1951, she started the Children's Conservation League (CCL Mother's Club) and brought girl scouting to Catawba. She was a member of the Catawba Island Fireman's Auxiliary and St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Clinton. Survivors include her children: Sharon (Mike) Heinberger and David (Barbara) Petersen all of Danbury; friend and companion, Frank Shamrov of Maple Heights, OH; grandchildren: Lori (Bob) Dininni of Columbus, OH, Kimberly Jacobs of Hopkinton, MA and Russell (Sarah) Petersen of Sheboygan, WI and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister: Frances (Stensen) Petersen and brother: Lawrence (Helen) Vollmer. Eva Jean was a devoted mother whose love and support never wavered. She has always been there to guide us and to smooth and make our way easy. She will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Peninsula Chapel, LakesideMarblehead, OH where visitation will be held Thursday from 3:00 6:00 pm. Burial will be in Catawba Island Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Danbury Boy Scout Troop 331 or Catawba Island Fire Dept.
