Erma W. Marks

Erma W. Marks, 80, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Parkvue Health Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio. Born August 26, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Erma May (Vroman) Marks. She was born in the home of her great-grandparents, Philip and Amelia Vroman, the first permanent settlers of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. Erma grew up in Marion, Ohio where she graduated from Marion Harding High School with the class of 1943. During WWII, she joined with the women who helped our country by working in factories. Later she worked as a photo colorist for the Dale Hughes Studio, Stein’s Studio, and Cubberly’s Studio. When she and her parents returned to live at Put-in-Bay again, she worked as a sales person for Ken and Greta Enterprises for several years. Erma’s artistic talents were evident in the various crafts which she used in making gifts for others. She also enjoyed gardening. Her beautiful formal flower garden caught the eyes of passers-by at the family homestead. She was quite interested in island and family history. She spent many hours researching and recording what she found. She attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Put-in-Bay. She is survived by her three sisters, Marian Cochran of New Port Richey, Fl.; Rhea Kahle of Delta, Ohio; and Evelyn Manter of Put-In-Bay. Also surviving are four nieces and six nephews.
