Elva Mae Herbert

January 25, 1926 — March 11, 2021

Elva Mae (Klug) Herbert, 95, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, passed away March 11, 2021 at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. She was born on January 25, 1926, the youngest of four daughters, to Nina (Leow) and John Klug. She married Clifford W. Herbert in October, 1946. Elva grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Salem Oak Harbor High School in 1944 and served as a class officer and class historian. She lived in Baraboo, WI while Cliff attended the University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill and then returned to Ohio and lived first in Bay Township and then Oak Harbor for the last 60 years. She was a den mother and was active in both Mothers’ Roundtable and Our Heritage OCCL’s. She served as District Clerk for the Soil and Water Conservation District for 17 years and was honored as Outstanding District Employee of the Year in 1983. Elva enjoyed family camping trips from Ohio to Los Angeles with stops at numerous national parks along the way, including Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Yosemite was her favorite. She also enjoyed her trips to England and Germany. Elva was a devoted member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. In 1990 she joined, and later led, the church’s Care Team. That became her primary mission over the rest of her life. In addition, as needs arose, she took on some additional “missions” and became known as the “Deviled Eggs Lady” and the “Diaper Lady”. Elva truly enjoyed and appreciated her many friends and neighbors in Oak Harbor, and especially enjoyed hearing about her family—grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins—and all of their activities and accomplishments. She is survived by four sons, Keith (Jan) Herbert, Tulsa, OK; Alan (Karen) Herbert, Uniontown, OH; Mark (Pam) Herbert, Brunswick, OH; Kevin (Debbie) Herbert, Medina, OH; grandchildren Ron Herbert, Ryan Pickut, Britton Herbert, Alex Herbert, Sam Herbert, Jenny Kissinger, Craig Herbert, Nathan Herbert, and Ross Herbert and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Cliff, her daughter Gail Pickut, son-in-law Woody Pickut, her parents, and sisters Irene, Gertrude, and Lucille. Graveside Services will begin at 11am, Thursday, March 18, 2021 at the Salem Township Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorials can be made to St. Paul UCC Care Team (for postage).
