Elizabeth Ann Neidecker

June 3, 1920 — October 26, 2009

Elizabeth Ann Neidecker, 89, of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away on October 26, 2009 at Blakely Care Center in Bowling Green. Betty was born on June 3, 1920, in Port Clinton, Ohio to Fred and Alpha (Hennesy) Neidecker, who preceded her in death, as did a sister Nancy, and a brother, John. She studied at Wittenberg College and Indiana University, but her greatest loyalty was to The Ohio State University, where she received her bachelor's degree; her master's degree was from Case Western University. Although she enjoyed working for awhile as a newspaper reporter, her profession was the field of speech pathology and audiology, in which she worked in the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center before joining the faculty at Bowling Green State University in 1962; she retired in 1982. At BGSU, her teaching focused on the training of speech and hearing specialists for work in schools. A textbook she wrote is well known in that field. Her lifelong fondness for the Lake Erie region led to her owning property over the years at Port Clinton, Catawba, Kelleys Island, and Marblehead. She maintained a lake front cottage at the latter location until just a few years ago and in 1995, proudly wrote and published The Marblehead Lighthouse: Lake Erie's Eternal Flame, a history of the Marblehead Lighthouse. Many aspects of history interested Betty, as she was involved in the Ohio Canal Society and several regional and county historical museums. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Port Clinton and St. John's Episcopal Church in Bowling Green. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 30 from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home (founded by her great grandfather) 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM with Reverend Michael Wiechers officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the BGSU Foundation (Neidecker Scholarship); St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 214 E. Second Street, Port Clinton, OH 43452; St. John Episcopal Church, 1503 Mercer Road, Bowling Green, OH 43402; or the Ottawa County Historical Society, P.O. Box 385, Port Clinton, OH 43452. Funeral Home: Neidecker-LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home - Port Clinton Chapel 1124 Fulton Street Port Clinton, OH US 43452
