Edward Joseph Schmitt, 92, of Port Clinton, Ohio, died Monday morning at Magruder Hospital following a very brief illness. He was born February 13, 1915 in Carleton, Michigan, the son of Joseph A. and Anna Winifred (McCormick) Schmitt. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1985 after working as a tool and die maker for 44 years. On September 19, 1958 he married Elsie M. Champion, who preceded him in death in 1998. Together they had four daughters, Carolyn (Charles) Barnes of Port Clinton, Mary Schmitt of Silver Spring, Maryland, Dr. Suzanne (Daniel) Savage of Toledo, Lisa (Bryan) O’Neill of Toledo and an “adopted” son, Alan Kruser of Toledo. His siblings, both deceased, were Dorothy Gentner of Monroe, Michigan, and Arthur Schmitt of Carleton, Michigan. Grandchildren are Andrew (Claudia) and Elissa Barnes, and Grace and Clark Edward O’Neill; great-grandchildren are Mariella Barnes and her twin siblings yet to be born. During his bachelor years, Ed was an avid traveler, pilot, stockcar pit crew member, and boater. After marrying, he was a devoted husband and father, enjoying many road trips throughout the U.S. to family reunions, and remodeling their home. Since Elsie’s passing, Ed did very well living alone and made many friends as a regular at Tony Packo’s in Toledo and Mr. Ed’s in Port Clinton. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 19 from 2-9 PM at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton. Memorials contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ottawa County Humane Society.
