Edward Charles Dress, 85, of Marblehead, Ohio died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton. He was born on October 7, 1923 in Lakeside, Ohio, the son of the late Paul Frederick and Anna Marie (Kleinow) Dress. Ed was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served as a torpedo man in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked for the Marblehead Quarry for 43 years, retiring as a foreman for the Standard Slag Company. He then went to work for Biro Manufacturing in Marblehead as a groundskeeper for an additional 15 years. He was a lifelong member and church council member of St. John Lutheran Church in Marblehead which was built by his Dad. He was proud to be a charter member of the VFW Post #7572, Marblehead, where he was on the firing squad. He was also on the Marblehead Council many years ago. His hobbies included reading, learning, fishing, hunting, and most importantly, gardening as he was well known in his neighborhood as "Mr. Gardener". He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife Phyllis (LePage) whom he married on August 9, 1947; daughters: Susan E. Dress, Marblehead and Diana (Frank) Van Deusen, Port Clinton; sons: Charles (Retha) Dress, Port Clinton; John Paul (Dawn) Dress, Marblehead; Ted (Janine) Dress, Marblehead, and Phil (Erin) Dress, Toledo; grandchildren: Jennifer Dress, Sean Dress, Joshua Gallup, Douglas Nason, Melissa Portales, Rachel Pierce, Rebecca Dress, Emily Dress, Melanie Krouse, David Dress, Deanna Dress; great grandchildren: Cheyenne Sirene, Tyler Nason, Enrique Portales, Sophia Dress. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Edith LeVeck, Lucille Simon, and Annabelle Lessentine; brothers: Paul, Wilbur, Louis, Allan, & Bob Dress. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, 7755 E. Harbor Road, Lakeside-Marblehead, OH. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, 117 Stone Street, Marblehead, with additional visitation being held at the church one hour prior to the service. Reverend Christina L. Young will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Danbury Twp., with military honors being given by members of VFW Post #7572, Marblehead.
