Dorthy Katherine Kirsch, 83, of Put-in-Bay passed peacefully on March 29, 2023. Dee Dee as she was known to all, was born on August 26, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan.
Dee Dee was raised on Put-in-Bay in the family home on Chapman Rd built by her grandfather, George Washington Stoiber. Dee Dee rode the Put-in-Bay Steamer to and from Detroit growing up visiting her namesake aunt Dorthy in Detroit. She attended school on Put-in-Bay and high school at Andrews School for girls in Willoughby, Ohio. There are countless stories and memories growing up on Put-in-Bay with all the usual suspects of the time.
Dee Dee met her husband Donald Kirsch on Put-in-Bay riding his red Harley Davidson in 1955. They married in 1957 and crisscrossed the country raising a family while Don pursued his engineering career. In the early 1970s they helped run her mother Louise Stoiber’s bar, Frosty’s and in 1972 became proprietors of the Shirt Shack and Arcade.
A new chapter of stories and memories began on Put-in-Bay in 1972 running the Shirt Shack in the summers, living in Bexley, Ohio in the off season, with Don teaching at Columbus Technical Institute.
Commuting back and forth from Columbus on the weekends to PIB, many young college students caught a ride in the Kirsch’s family truckster. The summers included residing back at the PIB family home, with its newly appointed name, KampKooKoo’s Nest, raising a family, running the Shirt Shack, housing employees and of course all the Put-in-Bay “entertainment” which perpetually came through KampKooKoo’s doors. The Shirt Shack is a family business 50 years running.
Dee Dee’s sense of humor, quick wit, compassion, and kindness reached and touched many souls. Dee Dee’s spirit never dimmed and is shining bright in the next life.
A sincere THANK YOU to the staff of the Commons of Providence and Providence Care who cared for Dee Dee. The staff’s continued feedback of what a pleasure to care and love Dee Dee confirmed her inherent kindness.
