Dorothy Ann Washington

April 16, 1928 — March 12, 2014

Dorothy Ann Washington, nee Taylor, known as Annie to her friends passed away March 12th at Stein Hospice in Sandusky Oh surrounded by family and friends. She was born on April 16, 1927 in Newark OH to Samuel O. Taylor and Dorothy Marguerite Watson. Ann married Ernest "Ernie" M. Washington Jr. and they had one daughter Linda Kay (Washington) Hooberman Ann traveled alone with her new baby, by train (jammed with military personnel, she had to sit in the isle on her suitcase), to Fort Pierce, FL in 1945 to see Ernie who had enlisted in the Navy. After the war, Ernie and Ann worked hard and saved their money to buy their first home in Mansfield OH and enjoyed trips to Lake Erie for boating and scuba diving. Ann was jaunty driving around her new 1953 yellow Buick Convertible! Ann became the President of the Mansfield Skin Divers club and arranged dive trips around the world for club members like, Cayman Islands, Belize, Sea of Cortez and Tobermorey Canada. Ann was named "Diver of the Year 1969" by the Ohio Council of Skin and scuba Divers. In March of 1978 she and Ernie went to San Salvador for a week where they stayed in thatched huts and the monkeys stole her toothpaste! Over the years, together with Ernie, Ann participated in a myriad of diving expeditions including the wreck of the Prison ship Success, where they retrieved numerous artifacts including the large doors, bottles and anchors. Some of these are common in the vacationland area such as the large anchor in front of Wendy's, also the large one at the Jet Landing at Put-in-Bay, the Maritime Museum in Sandusky and more! On a trip with her daughter Linda, husband Neal and granddaughter Julie to Washington they met with Sen. Pete Wilson and others at the Capitol building for a party celebrating Neal's Stonecrest project. In 2004 Ernie and Ann were surprised with a 60th Anniversary party at the home of friends Judy and Denny Roettger complete with neighbors and friends. Ann would not miss doing her daily crossword puzzles and reading (three books a week) about 7800 books in the last 50 years! She was the "keeper of the family heirlooms" which included many of her prized possessions and the numerous shells and corals that she collected on her adventures. Ann also enjoyed her service and membership of Eastern Star. Ann is survived by her husband of 70 years Ernie, her daughter Linda and husband Neal Hooberman, grandchildren John Hooberman and wife Kristin Bonnalie, granddaughter Julie Ann Evans and Kevin Foley, and great grandchildren Cade and Gianna Bonnalie, good friends including the members of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Underwater Search and Rescue Team and Jenny and Rod Althaus.
