Dorothea H. Hartley

Dorothea H. Hartley, 96, of Lakeside, Ohio, and formerly of Troy, Ohio, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016 at Otterbein North Shore Jane Baker House, Lakeside. She was born on July 20, 1919 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late August and Anna (Cadman) Heckman. She married Richard S. Hartley on October 17, 1942 and he preceded her in death on October 21, 2014. Dorothea graduated in 1937 from Wilkinsburg High School, and furthered her studies at Ohio Wesleyan University where she received her BA degree in 1941. Following an internship in hospital dietetics at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was certified by the American Dietetics Association. She was a Therapeutic Dietician at Presbyterian Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and also at Stanford University Hospital in San Francisco, CA until her retirement in 1944. She was a member of the Troy First United Methodist Church in Troy, Ohio where she served as president of United Methodist Women and where she served on the Administrative Board for 32 years. She was a founding member of the Association of American University Women of Miami County, as well as an active member of the Current Events Club of Troy for 30 years. In 2002, Dorothea and Richard moved from Troy to the North Shore Retirement Community in Lakeside, Ohio where she enjoyed being a member of the Lakeside Noonday Club. She was also a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church where she was active in the church. Dorothea enjoyed traveling to 50 countries and 49 states, playing bridge, painting, but most of all, being with family and friends. Survivors include her son: Thomas (Karen) Hartley, of Hertford, North Carolina; daughters: Doranne (William) Coad, of Richmond Hill, Georgia and Sandra (David) Geiger, of Johns Creek, Georgia; grandchildren: Jeffrey Coad, Richard Coad, Meghan Geiger Mott, Erik Geiger, Elizabeth McElroy, William Hartley; great-grandchildren: Nathan Coad, Liam Coad, Lilly Coad, Duncan Coad, Caroline Coad, Caroline Mott, Peter Michael Mott, Haines Hartley, Cooper Hartley, Elizabeth Geiger, and David Geiger. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brother: Dr. James A. Heckman. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held in Troy, Ohio later this summer.
