Donald M. Mortus, 82, of Port Clinton, OH, died Monday at his residence. He was born October 24, 1924 in Gypsum, OH, a son of the late Louis and Frieda (Balduf) Mortus. . Don was a foreman for U. S. Gypsum, retiring in 1987. He was a longtime employee of the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Don was the Port Clinton Fire Chief from 1977 – 1979. While he was Fire Chief he was instrumental in starting the Port Clinton E.M.S. and served as its first and only chief. He taught fire school to three generations of firefighters. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, where he was a past deacon and a former Sunday School teacher. Don was a past president of the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fireman’s Association and was a member of the Ottawa County Fire Chiefs Association. He served on the Port Clinton Police Auxiliary, and was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 361 at St. John Lutheran Church. Don also loved camping and was a member of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast. On July 21, 1990, he married the former Linda Hehl and she survives. Also surviving are his sons, Ronald (Mary) Mortus of Strongsville, OH, Gregory (Sandy) Mortus of Fairview Park, OH, Gary (Carrie) Mortus of Catawba Island; grandchildren: Julia Sander, Lori McElwin, Lindsey Mortus, Leslie Bolte, Adam Mortus, Abbey Mortus; seven great-grandchildren; extended family: Dana McClanahan, Matthew McClanahan, Cynthia Jess, Lori Floriana and their children and grandchildren; brothers: Norman Mortus of Ruskin, FL, Paul Mortus of Erie Township, Jack Mortus of Catawba Island, Bob (Carol) Mortus of Port Clinton, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Dennis Mortus. The family will receive friends from 2-5 & 6-8:30 P.M. Thursday at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday. The Rev. David A.Voll will officiate, and interment will be in Roose Cemetery, Salem Township. Fireman memorial services will be conducted at 8:30 pm Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Ottawa County or Kelleys Island Vol. Fire Department.
