Donald C. Stephens, 89 of Put-in-Bay, OH passed away December 8, 2023 at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, OH. He was born January 27, 1934 in Lakewood, OH to the late Fred and Eleanor (Nutting) Stephens.
Some people have affectionately known him as “Grundoon”, a nickname given to him by his Army buddies while stationed in Germany during the Korean War. It was here that he met his wife, Rosemarie Harder and they were married October 19, 1956.
His career was a Nuclear Health Physicist, but his love was sailing, which led him to Put-in-Bay. Don & his wife built a home on the island for weekends and vacations till he retired, and the island has been their home until God called him home.
While on the island Don belonged to many organizations and was a charter member to some. They include: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, Lake Erie Island Historical Society, The Crews Nest, and last but not least, he was The Master Baster of the famous Put-in-Bay Hog Roasters.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years Rosemarie; sons: Cliff (Jayne) Stephens and Dan Stephens; daughter Pam Stephens; grandsons: Nick, Joe (Carly), Jared, and Cody; and great-grandson William Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Williard Stephens and twin brother David Stephens.
Graveside services were held privately by the family in Mapleleaf Cemetery, Put-in-Bay, OH. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Put-in-Bay E.M.S./Fire Department or St. Paul Episcopal Church, Put-in-Bay.
