Dewayne W. Brough, 91 of Oak Harbor, OH passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Riverview Health Care, Oak Harbor. He was born on the “3rd day, 3rd month, 33rd year” (March 3, 1933) in Oak Harbor, OH to the late James and Ethel (Kroeger) Brough. On September 12, 1953, he married the love of his life, the former Kathleen “Kitty” Armbruster. Dewayne was a life-long farmer, most known for his prize-winning tomatoes and the best sweet
corn around.
When “Big D” wasn’t in the fields, he was often in the woods - he was a distinguished competition coon hunter and held many leadership positions in the sport; he was a former President of Buckeye Coonhunters, President of the Redbone Hunters and Breeders Association, President and Lifetime Director of the National Redbone Coonhound Association, and UKC Master of Hounds and Bench Show Judge.
In addition to his leadership and influence, his Toussaint Redbones were well known across North America for their Champion bloodlines. Big D was a true ambassador in the sport, which brought many amazing people into the lives of the Brough family. Dewayne was quick to make friends near and far, and friends often became like family.
Whether at home or at a campground, he had a gift of bringing people together - especially over good food (often “running the roads” to drive as far as possible for whatever specialty ingredient he was after). He shared his love for food, fellowship and Ohio State football with all who knew him.
He will be most remembered as kind and generous; spending time and using his knowledge to help countless people spanning multiple generations find their way into farming, livestock, hunting and community.
Dewayne was a member of LaPointe United Methodist Church, Port Clinton, where each year he would gleam with pride when his family packed the pews, nearly filling the church for the Christmas Eve service. An evening full of tradition that his children and grandchildren looked forward to each and every year and where many fond memories were made.
Dewayne leaves to cherish his memory his wife of nearly 71 years, Kitty; children: Tom (Debra) Brough, Jerry Brough, LuAnn Blausey, Dean (Kami) Brough, and Larry Brough; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; and sister Shirley Moorhead. He was preceded in death by his son John Brough and sister Joyce Bradshaw.
