David S. Segaard

April 14, 1940 — May 29, 2024

David S. Segaard, 84, of Port Clinton, OH passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Edgewood Manor Healthcare Center, Port Clinton, OH. He was born April 14, 1940 in Fremont the son of Stensen Peter and Margaret Edna (Covell) Segaard. David was a devoted husband to Joan Marie Robron, the love of his life for 60 years. The were married April 22, 1961. Joan preceded him in death on December 22, 2021.

David was a son, brother, uncle, father of four, grandfather of seven, great-grandfather of nine, with one more on the way. He was a trailblazer, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist. He loved animals; he and Joan adopted their beloved cats, Margy & Homer from the Humane Society.

During his high school years, David lived briefly in New Orleans, where he discovered Jazz; and in Oklahoma where he became enamored with guitars and cowboy boots.

As a young dad, with the help of his brothers and father, David gutted and refurbished his home and built a greenhouse where he could enjoy his love of flowers.

David had many hobbies but the one he enjoyed most, fishing, became his new occupation. David had been an electrician at the U.S. Gypsum Company for 25 years. After that milestone, he became involved in the commercial fishing industry and together with his wife, Joan and sons, Richard and Edward, they launched Segaard Fisheries which operated for another 25 years.

After selling his fishery, he repurposed his company barn into a music hall. David and Joan opened the barn to the public every Tuesday and Friday evening for 20 years. His passion for music inspired him to play and build guitars, mandolins, and banjos. David’s legacy lives on in a new building called Gypsum Crossing Bluegrass – where his Celebration of Life will be held Friday June 7th.

Surviving are his children: Elisabeth Smith of Sandusky, Richard Segaard of Port Clinton, Ann (Denny Kopp) Segaard of Catawba Island, Edward (Lecia) Segaard of Greenwood, SC; grandchildren: Helen Smith, Samantha Smith, Kathryn Smith, Matthew Johnson, Michael (Chenoa) Johnson, Kyle (Michelle) Johnson, Christopher (Jada) Segaard; great-grandchildren: Gideon Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Gabriel Johnson, Naomi Johnson, Joanna Johnson, Noah Johnson, James Johnson, Collin Johnson, David Johnson; sister: Susan Segaard of Cincinnati, OH.
