David Lewis Mylander, 88 of Oak Harbor, OH passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Elmwood Assisted Living in Fremont, OH. He was born May 9, 1935 in Oak Harbor to the late Stanley and Doris (Garner) Mylander. On June 9, 1956 he married Ruth Harris, and she survives. Dave retired following more than 40 years from Brush Wellman Inc. (now Materion) in Elmore, OH where he served in various engineering and management assignments, retiring as Director of Strategic Accounts. He and his wife owned an antique shop for 20 years south of Oak Harbor before retirement.
David was an Eagle Scout and was active in all the sports programs at Salem-Oak Harbor High School. He was awarded “All-SBC” and All-Ohio” status in football his senior year. He was awarded a full scholarship in football to the University of Toledo, graduating in 1960. He was later elected to the Oak Harbor High School Sports Hall of Fame.
David served many years as Trustee, Treasurer, Vice-President and President of Church Council and also as Saturday worship service Usher for St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor. His mother was organist at the church for 40 years. He was a member of Oak Harbor Masonic Lodge #495 F. & A.M., Royal Arch Chapter #162, Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo, Zenobia Shrine of Toledo, Ottawa County Shrine Club, Elks Lodge #1718 of Port Clinton, American Society of Metals, APMI International, NRA, Marsh Club, Ottawa County Genealogical Society and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. He was very active in genealogical studies of his ancestors, tracing the Mylander family back into the 18th century from Rodinghausen. Westphalia, (Prussia) Germany where he visited and researched the area several times. The Mylander family came to Salem Township, Ottawa County around 1850. He was also an avid sports fan of the Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Lions.
Survivors include his wife Ruth, of Oak Harbor; daughter Erin (Eric) Burrey of Woodville, OH; grandson Cameron (Karah) Sneath; great-granddaughters Aubrey & Stella; and sister Judy (Drew) Fredlund of Gastonia, NC.
Funeral Services will begin at noon on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 122 Ottawa Street, Oak Harbor, where the family will receive friends beginning at 11am. Burial will be in Salem Township Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Endowment Trust Fund, Zenobia Shriners Children Hospital Fund, Stein Hospice, or Doris Mylander Scholarship Fund.
