Darrel Hilton Locke

May 2, 1945 — February 26, 2024

Darrel H. Locke, 78, passed away at home in Lakeside, Ohio on February 26, 2024. He was a resident of East Liverpool, Ohio for most of his life, until relocating to be closer to family in recent years. His parents, Earl and Doris (Gadd) Locke, and two brothers, Wayne and Ralph, preceded him in death.


He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School (1963) and attended Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. He was a gifted pianist with a studio in the Brookes Building (5th and Market) and portrayed composer Will Thompson for local history events. As a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, he played the piano, organ, and sang in the choir.


During his service in the U.S. Army (Vietnam, 1967-70), he was stationed in Germany, where he learned the language and returned with stories and recipes he shared throughout his life.


At Homer Laughlin China Co., his skilled hand at drafting helped with the relaunch of Fiestaware in the 1980s. He also worked for New Castle Refractories and James Locke Jewelers. An avid woodworker, he completed many personal projects, private commissions, and gifts for his family and community.


He is survived by daughter, Sarah Locke (Cezanne Farris-Gilbert) and grandchildren, Cordelia and Calder Gilbert of Lakewood, CA. A son, David Locke, Sr. and grandson David Locke, Jr. reside in East Liverpool. His ex-wife, Maureen Locke, remained a friend after more than twenty years of marriage.


A private service will be held at Lakeside Chautauqua Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Humane Society. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.neideckercrosserpriesman.com.
