Daniel E. Witter, 86, of Port Clinton, Ohio and Ruskin, Florida returned home for the final time on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. He was born on July 22, 1927 in Ballville Township, Sandusky County Ohio, the son of Lawrence and Bessie (Slates) Witter. On July 20, 1949 he married Catherine Eva Batesole from Riley Township, and she survives. Dan worked at the former New Departure Hyatt Bearings, a Division of General Motors in Sandusky, Ohio until his retirement in 1984. He designed, built, managed and owned Witterhaven Marina, Campground, Train Room, Wind Farm, and DEW Island, located on the Portage River in Port Clinton. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton where he was founding member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a member of the Port Clinton Knights of Columbus Council #1750 and DESOTO Assembly #805. Dan served in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class during World War II. He continued his service to the community as an active member and past Commander of Alfred E Dodway American Legion Post #113. As a lifelong member of the community he served as the Ottawa County Civil Defense Director, served two terms on Port Clinton City Council, Third Ward. Served as the Independence Day Chairman for the City of Port Clinton several years and was a chair for Port Clinton's Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1978. He maintained membership at the Moose Lodge and VFW Homer D Gardner Post #2480. The highlight of his service to the community was 50 plus active years with the Boy Scouts of America. His service started as Ottawa District Commissioner for Toledo Area Council and continued thru various volunteer positions at the Council and District level, including Scoutmaster of Port Clinton Troop 366. He received Scouting's highest honor bestowed on volunteers, The Silver Beaver in 1969 and The Bronze Pelican for service to Scouting's Catholic youth. Survivors include his wife: Cathy; children: Terence & Dianne Witter, Port Clinton; Connie & Roger Christian, Delaware, Ohio; Scott & Mary Ann Witter, Marblehead, Ohio; Jeff & Stacey Witter, Sandusky, Ohio; Cynthia & John Oleksiak, Parma, Ohio; grandchildren: Jason Witter, Jessica & Gene Patrick, Beth & Ricardo Rivas, Ruthann Wehrle, Roseann & Ryan Todd, Emily & Wally Lang, Daniel & Melissa Witter, Mattie Witter, Lindsey Witter, Allison Witter, Keith Streng, Joe Oleksiak; great-grandchildren: Nicholas Hurt, Cameron Hurt, Dominic Hurt, Wyatt Hall, Jarett Hall, Chloe Dorton, Katee Todd, Rosemarie Todd, Allie Lang, Conner Witter, Sabrina Johnson, Jaidyn Streng, Ryleigh Streng, Kailynn Streng; and brother: Leon & Rose Witter, Defiance, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents: Lawrence & Bessie Witter and granddaughter: Kara Hurt. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. On Saturday, March 8, 2014, prayers will begin at 9am at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton, with Father John C. Missler officiating. Private burial will take place at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Port Clinton.
