Dana E. Edmonds, 88, who resided at Seacrest Center at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, died Friday January 19, 2007. He was born December 23, 1918 in Millinocket, Maine, the son of William and Lillian (Doll) Edmonds. On January 8, 1944, he married Florence May (Rumery) and she survives. Dana was formerly employed as a millwright at the Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, Maine. He also served the nuns in Millinocket as a carpenter, performed needed tasks to deep their convent livable. The nuns dubbed Dana “St. Joseph” for his loving care. After moving to Port Clinton, he owned and operated The Dana Construction Company, building many homes in the area. He was a decorated Company Staff Sgt. in the US Army during WWII, serving with the famed 10th Mountain Division. He was a ski instructor with the elite 10th Mountain ski troopers, who trained at Copper Mountain in Colorado, that later became a famous resort. He was one of only 15 men surviving the assault on Riva Ridge in the PO Valley in Italy. He was active in the 10th Mountain annual reunions. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, and was active in the Christ Renews his Parish. A member of the Knights of Columbus since 1937, he was a 4th degree Knight, and took part in many service projects. Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, William (Lynn) Edmonds of Mansfield; daughters, Yvonne (Maury) Hall of Port Clinton, Lea (Dr. James) Ball of Orlando, Fla, Rita (Gary) Sharples of Swanton and Madeline Dubbert of Port Clinton; 15 Grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Clemons, his parents, an infant child and a brother Garland, who died in childhood. The family will receive friends from 4-7 P.M. Monday at the Neidecker, LeVeck and Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton. Prayer services will begin at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton with the Rev. James Brown officiating. Interment will be in Catawba Island Cemetery, with graveside military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Veterans Home, Stein Hospice or Immaculate Conception School.
