Charles Whiting

Charles R. Whiting, Sr., 83, of Port Clinton, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at ST. Luke's Hospital. He was born Nov. 5, 1927 in Port Clinton, the son of the late Emery and Lela (Kuffman) Whiting. He married Ethel M. Slauterbeck on Dec. 31, 1947 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1999. He served in the United States Army from 1944 until 1948. Mr. Whiting was an ordinance specialist working at Erie Army Depot and then transferring to Pearl Harbor until retirement in 1984. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1610 where he attained the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest degree a member can receive, Port Clinton American Legion, Port Clinton Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 2295, Port Clinton. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, playing cards and dancing. Surviving are his sons: Charles (Debra) Whiting, Jr. of Lakeland, FL, Darrell (Dawnna) Whiting of Port Clinton; grandchildren: Justin Whiting, Evan Whiting, Monica Whiting, Michael Whiting, Charles Whiting III; great-grandchidlren: Courtney Whiting, Mason Whiting; sister: Ida Wilson of West Palm Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Ethel, brothers: Wilbur, Harvey, Emery, Richard, Jim "Monk", Orville "Popeye" and sister: Frances Dress. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, March 4, 2011 at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton where visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 4:00 and 6:00 8:00 pm. Moose Pilgrim prayer services will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 pm Thursday. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton. Memorial contributions may be given to Moose Heart.
