Charles W. Schneider, 85, of Elmore died Friday, January 22, 2010 at St. Charles Mercy Hospital, Oregon, OH. He was born November 22, 1924 in Fremont, OH to the late Emery A. and Mary E. (Long) Schneider. On June 5, 1949 he married the former Murlyn Bothe and she survives. Charles was drafted, while still in school, into the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Bagley which was heavily involved in several battles throughout the War. After the War he spent a little time as a Barber, but retired July 28, 1986 from Bethlehem Steele after 23 years as a cook on various Lake Freighters. A treasured story that Charles loved to tell was the fact that one of the freighters he was on sought shelter during a storm on Lake Superior that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald. He was a Life Member of The United States Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Desoto Club, and the Elmore Historical Society. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Murlyn of Elmore; children: Margie (Sam) Schermerhorn of Toledo, OH, Steven H. Schneider of Elmore, Roger C. Schneider of Toledo, Gary N. Schneider of Goodyear, AZ., Craig R. Schneider of Elmore, Michael R. (Sherry) Schneider of Celina, OH, Janet A. (Dwayne) Schermerhorn of Holland, OH, Jane M. Schneider of Elmore, and Nancy R. (Kevin) Medere of Millbury, OH; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers: Donald, Galen, and Richard Schneider, and sister Dollie Mae Baukus. Friends are invited to share in lunch and fellowship February 13, 2010, beginning at noon at St. John's United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, led by Rev. William L. Bartholomew. Final resting place for Charles will be in Harris- Elmore Union Cemetery, Elmore. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Elmore Historical Society or Harris- Elmore E.M.S.
