Chad Matthew Magrum, 53, of Oak Harbor, passed away peacefully at home February 12, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 8, 1967 at Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton, OH a son to the late Howard I. and Shirley J. (Bennett) Magrum. Chad attended St. Boniface School and graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1985. After high school, Chad studied at the University of Toledo, Owens Community College, the police academy at Terra State Community College, and The Medical University of Ohio. He attended his first EMT class in 1986 through Vanguard Career Center, setting the scene for his life of community service. Dedicating much of his life to helping others, Chad served his community in many ways. He worked for several years as a peace officer in the Corrections Division of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Chad also served in the patrol and communications divisions of the Oak Harbor Police Department. He became a firefighter and was a member of the Portage Fire District for 12 years. Chad’s longest record of service was through his work on Mid-County EMS. His true passion was his work in Emergency Medicine. Chad joined Mid-County in 1986, rose through the ranks and became their youngest Chief in 1991, serving as Chief for 25 years. During his time as Chief, Chad also served on several state-level committees to facilitate needs of EMS agencies across the state. Chad provided care for many patients working at Mid-County, Sandusky County EMS, LifeStar and Promedica Transport Network, with a lifetime career of over 11,400 calls. Chad also worked to train future paramedics through Owens Community College and provided a combined total of over 45 years of service. Chad will be remembered for his service, sense of humor, larger than life personality, collector of EVERYTHING, and his love for community and for his family, both blood and brothers/sisters in service, most notably his love for his wife and best friend, Jenny whom he married July 30, 1993. Chad is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jennifer; father and mother-in-law Jim and Judy Gschwind; siblings: Cindy (Tom) Anderson, Charlie (Darla) Magrum, Cathy (Leroy) Hall, Curt Magrum, Cecile (Al) Graening and Carol (Mike) Barr, Julie (John) Pratt, and Joe Gschwind; 16 nieces and nephews; 31 great-nieces and nephews; 8 aunts and uncles; 18 brothers and sisters on the EMS and his cat Gizmo. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Cris Magrum. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 16th from 1-8pm at Oak Harbor United Methodist Church, 360 E. Ottawa Street, Oak Harbor, OH where the family asks that the elderly and those with special needs attend from 1-2pm, followed by public visitation from 2-8pm. There will be an E.M.S. Service to be conducted by the Mid-County E.M.S. at 8pm. Funeral Services will begin at 11am on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the Church with Pastor Rob Rakay officiating and where live streaming will be done via facebook and a recording will be available at https://youtube.com/channel/UC7D_2FwMGRMj394x0M6pZbA. Due to the Covid19 Pandemic, a reminder of facial coverings and social distancing will observed. Because of Chad’s great community service, a procession is scheduled to follow the Service and will include family, friends, community members, Police, Fire, and EMS divisions. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute are asked to consider the Mid-County E.M.T. Association or Oak Harbor United Methodist Church.
