Carroll D. Miller, M.D.

September 6, 1917 — January 14, 2010

Dr. Carroll Denman "Cal" Miller, age 92, died peacefully January 14, 2010 at his home in Fremont. He was a devoted physician and family man, an avid reader, an outdoorsman -- a man who loved being alive and helping others. Born September 6, 1917, on a farm between Clyde and Fremont to James C & Martha (Green) Miller, he was the youngest of four children. Living during the Great Depression, Cal was an honor student and an all-county basketball star at Green Springs High School and a leader in Boy Scouts. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he worked as a bookkeeper at the local A& P grocery store to save money for school. He married Merry King, his high school sweetheart. He then entered medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, while working at Parke Davis producing blood plasma for wounded solders in World War II. After finishing medical school, Dr. Miller moved his family to Colorado Springs, CO. His Army career spanned from 1943-1949, starting as Private First Class and ending as Captain in the Medical Corps. Dr. Miller and his family returned to Ohio where he began a long and distinguished career as a family practitioner in Fremont. He made frequent house calls, saw entire families at his office, healed thousands of people through his knowledge of medicine and his well known sense of humor, and delivered an estimated 4, 000 babies. He became the plant physician for Union Carbide, a position which he held for 25 years, and for the Peter Eckrich Company. Dr. Miller served as Chief of Staff at Fremont Memorial Hospital in 1965. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary "Merry" King Miller, three sons, John (Lynne Lehman) Miller of Bryan, OH; Thomas Carroll (Amy Fraker) Miller of Wauseon; Robert Frank (Carol Kennedy) Miller; one daughter, Jo Ann (Dr. Charles P.) Bartley of Shelbyville, IN, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Nina Weickert Overmeyer of Fremont. He was preceded in death by one brother, James W. Miller, and one sister, Eva Klatcik. The world has lost a loving, brilliant, irreplaceably unique human being in Cal Miller. A Celebration of Dr. Miller's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 13, 2010 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 206 N. Park Ave., Fremont with the Rev. Daniel L. Orr officiating. Private interment will be in West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
