Calvin J. Magsig

December 10, 1923 — December 29, 2012

Calvin Jack Magsig, 89, of Elmore, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012. Born December 10, 1923, at home in Elmore, Ohio, he was the youngest son of John & Evea (Eckel) Magsig. He was married in 1953 to Justine Sterner, they remained married for 57 years until her death in 2010. From an early age Cal knew the value of hard work to gain the things he wanted. He ran a trap line every morning and often provided a meal of rabbit or squirrel for the family during the lean years of the Depression. Calvin graduated from Elmore High School in 1941 with straight A's in Physics, squeaking by in other subjects, - "there weren't classes in subjects I wanted to learn". Cal then spent some years moving from farming, to pumping oil wells, to driving stone trucks, and back to farming, always working at something. At one point he received advice from his dad, "Pop told me, you will never make it as a farmer, you need to find something else." By default one winter he worked for his brother Manly in his machine shop, and to quote - 'by spring I was hooked, there was nothing else I wanted to do'. Calvin soon became sole proprietor of Elmore Manufacturing Company in 1945, building a successful operation. He loved every minute of the work for the rest of his life, remaining involved in the day-to-day operations of the business up until the last few weeks. Cal was an dedicated, hard working man and expected the same from his family. For many years the vacation was always fishing at "George's" for Northern Pike and Walleye in the Bay of Islands, Ontario, Canada. He was instrumental in keeping Sugar Creek in its natural state. He was also involved in the Eagle Restoration project, buying a telescope that mounted on the window of the car to watch the eaglets off Route 300. Later Calvin kept close watch on all the Bluebirds nesting on his property, in the birdhouses he had made. Survivors include his children, Sam (Bev) Harrison of Columbus, OH, Laura (David) Magsig-Hartley of Spring, TX, and Becky Magsig of Pemberville, OH; grandchildren, Halley Williams and Damon Renfro; brother, Virgil (Spike) Magsig of Genoa, OH and sister Joy Perry of Perrysburg, OH, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Justine, brothers, Manly and Lewis Magsig. Calvin was a lifetime member of St. Paul-Trinity United Methodist Church, Elmore.
