Byron E. Gilbert

Byron E. Gilbert, 82, of Elmore, OH, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, OH. He was born in Toledo, OH on April 25, 1935 to Rupert & Doris (Drummond) Gilbert. Byron was a 1954 graduate of Clay-Genoa High School, and graduated from Stautzenberger Business School in 1964 as a draftsman. After graduating, he was an employee of Libbey-Owens Glass in East Toledo, and joined the Army National Guard 3641st Ordinance in Port Clinton, OH, serving active duty in 1961-62. Byron served 8 years in the National Guard and was a member and past commander of American Legion Post #279, Elmore, OH. In 1964, he joined the Ohio Department of Transportation in Bowling Green, OH as an inspector in the construction department, and also was utility coordinator for the right-of-way department, retiring in 1994. After his retirement, Byron worked as an inspector with the Ottawa County Sanitary Engineering Department for 6 years. He was a member of St. Paul-Trinity United Methodist Church, Elmore, where he served as leader of the church dartball team. Byron loved to play golf in the Elmore Tuesday night golf league at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Elmore. He also played in the Monday Farmers Golf League. Byron enjoyed traveling and he and his wife, Joan journeyed to Canada, England, Florida, California, Colorado and to Hawaii four times. On February 11, 1956, Byron married the former Joan Marsh at St. Paul-Trinity Church, and she survives. Also surviving are their wonderful sons, Brett L. (Rona) Gilbert, San Diego, CA, and Bradley J. Gilbert, Rossford, OH; sisters, Pat Caris, Woodville, OH, and Peggy Donley, Oregon, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. Thursday at Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Elmore- Genoa Chapel, 19550 West State Route 51, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 2, 2018. Interment will be at Harris-Elmore Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul-Trinity Church or American Legion Post #279.
