Bertha “Bertie” Brandes, 92, of Elmore, OH died Monday, April 16, 2007 at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor, OH. She was born March 2, 1915 in Toledo, OH a daughter of the late Charles E. & Alice “Ella” (Spiess) Yost. She married George H. Brandes on September 9, 1939 and he survives. Mrs. Brandes worked for Lawyer Sam Mason and Rueben Realty Co. She taught sixth grade for the former Woodville School District, and retired from Fremont City Schools where she taught special education and was a reading specialist. A graduate of Whittmer High School, Toledo, Mrs. Brandes attended Davis Business College, received her Bachelors in Education from Bowling Green State University; Masters in Education from BGSU; and her Masters in Guidance Counseling from the University of Toledo. She was a member St. John United Church of Christ, Elmore where she taught Sunday School, was a leader of theYouth Fellowship, Girl Scout Leader, member of Toledo Art Museum, St. Charles Hospital Guild, Samma Gamma Sorority (an organization of Museum presidents and past-presidents), and was an original study group member in Elmore. Mrs. Brandes and her husband traveled extensively through six continents and all 50 states. She is survived by her husband, George; daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” (John) Pattison of Rockville, MD, Nancy (Jack) Boone of Willits, CA, Brenda (Frank) Blatnik of Powell, OH; grandchildren, Jeff (Linda) Pattison, Dan (Carmel) Pattison, Scott (Michelle) Blatnik, Betsy (Dave Davis) Blatnik; great-grandson, Max Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard “Dick” Yost, Charles “Chuck” Yost; sister, Marjorie “Marge” Hosack. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 28, 2007 at St. John United Church of Christ, Elmore, OH, with the Rev. Ed Heilman, officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Elmore, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or the donor’s choice. Crosser Funeral Home, Elmore, is handling arrangements for the family.
