Bernice E. Hasselkus, 96, of Elmore, Ohio, died Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor, Ohio. She was born in Elmore on January 29, 1917, the only child of Paul & Bertha (Kardatzke) Ninke. Bernice was a 1935 graduate of the former Harris-Elmore High School, and attended alumni banquets until recently. On June 30, 1936, she married her sweetheart, Carl E. Hasselkus, and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1977. Although Bernice had no children, she was very close to her God-daughter, Jane Krotzer and her daughter Lori Venable, and their families. They spent every Christmas, Easter, and birthdays together. Bernice was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elmore, and the Ladies Aid and other organizations of the church. She is survived by many cousins. Bernice and Carl worked together for many years on their dairy farm milking cows, raising crops and various farm animals. Bernice was a home maker and loved to crochet, make rag rugs, do crossword puzzles, and bake cookies. Later, she worked at Hartman's Lunch in Elmore as a waitress and also worked at the 5 & 10 Cent Store in Elmore. She was very social and loved to be with others. She enjoyed shopping at Red, White, & Blue in Elmore and celebrated her 90th birthday at Red, White, & Brew with family and friends. Bernice traveled to area Euchre clubs to play cards and see her friends. She often drove others who could not drive anymore to appointments and social gatherings. Bernice loved her association with the Elmore Historical Society and her family sleigh and other memorabilia are on display in the society's log home. Friends may call from 2-8 P.M. Tuesday at Crosser Funeral Home, Elmore-Genoa Chapel, 19550 West State Route 51. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 412 Fremont St., Elmore. Rev. Stephen Lutz will officiate, and interment will follow in Harris-Elmore Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Educational Fund of Trinity Lutheran Church or to Harris-Elmore E.M.S.
