Audrey M. Gardner, 93, of Port Clinton, Ohio died Monday, May 21, 2007 at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio. She was born on August 31, 1913, on Catawba Island, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Eckhoff) Steffens. She married Earl Gardner on August 9, 1935, and he survives. After graduating from high school, she worked as an assistant to Dr. Ralph Roose, DDS, Port Clinton, then as an out of town shopper for the former LaSalle & Koch Department Stores in Toledo, OH. She also worked in the payroll department at Standard Products in Port Clinton until she quit working to raise her family. During that time, she and her husband owned and operated Gardy’s Laundromat, in Port Clinton. In 1970 she went to work for the City of Port Clinton in the waterworks department until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Port Clinton where she was the financial secretary, the first woman on the vestry, and where she taught Sunday School. She was a past member of the Magruder Hospital Auxiliary; oldest and last surviving member of the AS YOU LIKE IT Club, Port Clinton; and a member of the Birthday Club. Her hobbies included playing bridge. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Earl; sons, James (Jean) Gardner, Sandusky and Gary (Mary) Gardner, Port Clinton; daughter, Jane (Denny) Behrman, Oak Harbor, WA; Grandchildren, Barbara (Scott) Farrell, Mike Genzman, Ann Steinke, Christopher (Christina) Gardner, Earl “EJ” Gardner, Tyler Gardner; Great Grand-children, Jacob & Sammy Farrell, Ashley Lawrence, Grant & Grace Gardner; 1 Niece and 3 Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Curtis “Butch” Steffens; and sister, Myra Disher. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Port Clinton with the Reverend Margaret D’Anieri officiating. Interment will follow at Catawba Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Organ Fund, or to Stein Hospice.
