John W. Haskins, Jr.

October 18, 1955 — March 11, 2022

John W. Haskins, Jr., of Catawba Island and Naples, Florida, died on March 11, 2022. John was born October 18, 1955, in Newport, Rhode Island to Mary Glenn and J. William Haskins, Sr. John was a graduate of Perrysburg High School. He attended Ohio University and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. He worked at various advertising agencies in the Toledo area before starting his own business, John Haskins Graphic Design, in 1986. John was a talented artist and served clients throughout the Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan areas. John spent summers growing up at his family’s cottage on Catawba, where he fell in love with the area and Lake Erie. He was an avid boater and loved to fish. John had many hobbies and enjoyed kayaking, reading, history, golf, researching his family’s ancestry, and traveling with his family and friends. During his travels, John would always seek out a museum, fort, battlefield, or historical place to visit. John was a member of the Catawba Island Club and the Royal Palm Golf Club, Naples. John’s most cherished times were spent with his wife and daughter, followed by family and his large circle of friends. John was quick with his wit and humor and loved making others laugh. Together with his wife, they frequently entertained family and friends, where John could be found outside grilling steaks or smoking brisket and slabs of ribs. John is survived by his wife of 37 years, Annette (Balconi); daughter, Catherine Haskins, Catawba; mother, Mary Glenn Haskins, Perrysburg; sister, Barbara Haskins Bainter, Perrysburg; brothers, Benjamin Haskins, Cincinnati; Michael Haskins, Chesapeake, VA; brother and sister-in-law, John and Lisa Balconi, Sandusky; sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Richard Ninke, Sandusky; Aunt, Sandra Smith Reams, Catawba; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his father, J. William Haskins, Sr., and close friend and cousin, Bruce Miller. Visitation will be from 1-5 on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. Interment will be private in the Balconi Family Mausoleum. A party to celebrate John’s life will occur later this summer. In keeping with John’s love of history and his belief in establishing good reading habits at an early age, those wishing to make a contribution in his memory are asked to consider the Catawba Island Historical Society, PO Box 396, Port Clinton, OH, 43452, and the Imagination Library through the Ottawa County United Way (provides a free book every month to children under the age of 5), 1854 E.
