Jim L. Spreng

Jim L Spreng, 72, of Port Clinton, OH passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 23, 1950 in Mansfield, OH. Jim was the son of Lawrence M. and Donna M. (Etzwiler) Spreng and grew up on a dairy farm in Perrysville, OH. He married Beckett Newcomer on October 20, 1979. Jim was a serial entrepreneur and astute business man. Jim started his career at Peat Marwick (KPMG) and spent 20 years rising to become a partner in the Cleveland and Canton offices. Jim spent the next phase of his career as a business owner of various consulting firms and opening the Freedom Boat Club location on Lake Erie. He touched many lives through the business community and was an avid mentor to the younger generation. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 43 years - Beckett; father of Barron (Erica) Spreng of Lawrenceville, GA, Joan Morgan (Brian) Higgins of Great Falls, VA; proud grandfather of Beckett Higgins, Charleston “Charlie” Higgins, Paige Higgins, Wesleigh Spreng, brother of Becky (Patrick) Drouhard; cousin of Dr. William A. (Jody) Spreng; beloved uncle of Anna, Joshua, Peter, and Tabitha and a cousin of many. He is preceded in death by his father. Jim’s life was marked by an exceptionally generous spirit and desire to give to his community. He and Beckett were active across many charities in the various communities they lived. Jim had a passion for coaching and was a volunteer track coach for 15 years at Jackson Middle School. He was a best friend to many and a friend of Bill for 30 years. He spent his time fishing, golfing, reading, traveling, and enjoying the sunsets of Lake Erie. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Catawba Island Club Pavilion, 4235 Beach Club Rd. Port Clinton, OH with a Celebration of Jim’s Life to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Lake Erie Foundation, 236 Walnut Ave. Lakeside, OH 43440.
