George E. Hayes, 76 of Elmore, OH died Thursday, July 11, 2024 at his home under Hospice Care. He was born December 26, 1947 in Toledo, OH to the late Kenneth C. and Margaret M. (McGaharan) Hayes. George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. In 2006, he married Sheri (Cuevas) who preceded him in death February 23, 2021.
George was a public servant, mainly in law enforcement. He spent his early years in Rocky Ridge where he served on the Fire Department, EMT, and Police Chief for a few years. The majority of his career was centered around the Village of Elmore, where he served on the Police Department from 1982-2017. He was the Elmore Police Chief from 1985 until his retirement in 2017. He was also a member of American Legion Post #279 of Elmore. Some of his hobbies included fishing with his grandkids, woodworking, painting, camping, tinkering in his garage, and attending local flea markets.
Survivors include his children: Renee (Al) Henry of Oak Harbor, OH, Ryan (Anna Bahnsen) Hayes of Oak Harbor, OH, Jamie (Kris) Lowe of Elmore, OH, Alicia Barnhouse of Woodville, OH, and Kaysie Barnhouse of Elmore, OH; grandchildren: Justin and Ayron Henry, Logan (Ciara Harris) Merryfield, Kylie Lowe, Alyssa Goetz, Carson Pokrzywa, Jordyn Lowe, Britton Lowe, Gavin Lowe, Landon Browning, Kinsley Pokrzywa, and Cohen Pokrzywa; great-grandchild Harleigh Henry and baby Merryfield on the way; sister Renata (Leon) Wielandt of Belgium, Germany; brother Kenneth Hayes of Oregon, OH; sister Linda Dickman of Toledo; sister Beverly Kraemer and his beloved dog Maggie Mae. He was also preceded in death by his brother Jerry Stack and canine companion Jadie Marie.
Visitation will be Monday from 2-8pm at Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Elmore-Genoa Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 11am on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Harris-Elmore Union Cemetery where Military Honors will be given by American Legion Post #279 of Elmore. Memorial Contributions may be given to American Legion Post #279.
