George Alfred Atkinson

March 6, 1924 — December 2, 2022

George A. Atkinson, Jr., 98, of Port Clinton, OH loving son, husband,

father and grandfather, peacefully passed Friday, December 2, 2022 at

Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton, OH. He was born March 6, 1924 in

Belmore Ordmans, NJ the son of George Alfred and Harriet Geneva

(Gavitt) Atkinson, Sr. He married Betty M. Weis on June 25, 1949 and

she preceded him in death on August 19, 2022. He was a United States

Army Air Corps veteran serving in World War II. He served with the 8th

Air Force, 524th bomb squad, 379th (Grand Slam) bomb group. His

primary duty while stationed in Kimbolton was servicing and loading of

B-17 Flying Frotress. George worked at Erie Army Depot until he

transferred to Newark Airforce Base retiring in 1974. After

retirement he worked for Cedar Point and was a punter at Winous Point

Shooting Club in Port Clinton. He was a member of Immaculate

Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton and the Aircraft Owners

Pilot’s Association. He previously was a member of the Knights of

Columbus. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper.


Surviving are his son: Richard V. (Katherine) Atkinson-Miller of

Newark; grandchildren: Michael Joseph Miller of Belleville, MI, Tony

Lee Miller of Newark, Tonya Lynn Miller of Newark, Shawna Maria (Ron)

Lovell of Newark; great-grandchildren: Brian Miller, Keegan Miller,

Darian (Jared) Ritzius, Deyrek Lock, Brendon Lovell, Tonya (Erick)

Logan, Alicia Miller; great-great-grandchildren: Natalie, Avery,

Maverick, Liam and Cade. He is also survived by his sister-in-law:

Eldeen Atkinson, several nieces and nephews and his cat Boots. He was

preceded in death by his wife: Betty; son: Joseph M. Atkinson-Miller;

siblings: Eleanor Arnold, Lucille Haefling, Gertrude Childs, John

Atkinson and brother-in-law: Joseph Von Der Weis.


Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Monday, December 12, 2022

at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service,

1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton, OH with visitation on Monday from 10:00

am until the time of the service. Father Jonathon Wight will be

officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Riverview

Cemetery, Port Clinton, OH. Memorial contributions may be given to

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison St. Port Clinton,

OH 43452 or Liberty Aviation Museum, 3515 E. State Rd. Port Clinton,
