Edward Junior Sandrock

EDWARD Jr. SANDROCK, (94) joined his wife of 62 years in eternal peace early July 17th, 2014. Ed passed in his sleep of natural causes at Edgewood Manor, Port Clinton where he resided the past two years. He was born March 27, 1920 rural Elmore, Ohio; the eldest son of Edward Sandrock and Zelma (Collins) Sandrock. Seventeen year's young, farmer Ed (Junior) became the support for his mother and five younger siblings after the early passing of his father in an automobile accident. Through a blind date, Edward met and married Lois Ardis Shannon of Fremont, daughter of Wilson Oliver Shannon and Lois (Ford) Shannon. Ardis preceded Ed in death in 2008 as did his Parents and Sisters Phyllis and Evaden and Brothers Warren, Robert and Loren. Ed is survived by seven children; daughters Linda E. Petterson (William) Houston, Tx; Alice A. Chaffin (Richard) Sandusky; and sons John E.(Camille) Catawba; David L. Columbus; James A.(Cheryl) Oak Harbor; Paul F.(Patti) Port Clinton; and Thomas W. Columbus. Also surviving are Daughters-in-law Elpiniki Sandrock Pensacola FL; Cheri Sandrock Columbus, OH; Kathy Sandrock Virginia Beach, VA; 16 Grand Children and 20 Great Grand Children; sister-in-law Evelyn/Rusty (Loren) Sandrock, Toledo, OH; numerous nieces and nephews and Ed's oldest surviving relative (cousin) Marie (Sandrock) (Herb) Damschroder, Republic, OH, soon to be 96 years young. Starting out as a farmer, Ed spent a few years doing factory work while building a home in two halves on the Ford farm on rural Route 4 Sandusky; it was then transported to Stange Road in Ottawa County. With the rapid growth of the family, he soon had to put an addition on the two bedroom starter home and his occupation turned to carpentry and heavy equipment operator. In 1959 after acceptance of a caretaker position managing 35 acres at Camp YuKiTa, Catawba, the family moved to West Catawba Road. For the duration of his employment, Ed became a "Jack of all trades". Learning by reading; he taught himself electrical, plumbing and heating; even taking a welding course. These skills were again put to use for his family when he built a four Bedroom home on Schoolhouse Road, Catawba. Projects of notoriety he worked on were Bath houses at Crane Creek, Concessions and sewer/water lines at East Harbor, a cover over Inscription Rock on Kelleys Island and Construction of Peace Lutheran Church. Just before his formal retirement, Ed assumed the position as Ottawa County Building inspector. Even after retirement, he continued with odd jobs and building additions for people in the area. Those who knew Ed as a friendly person, likely also knew he could be a stickler; "if you're going to do something, do it right." The working life was the norm, but Ed did finally spend some time learning to relax. He and Ardis spent time trailer camping in later years, traveling as far as Galveston, Tx. and Florida. Together, they were also active in the church community with board positions and building committee, choir and organist; they were both founding members of Resurrection Lutheran on Catawba and then members at Peace Lutheran after moving to their final home in Port Clinton. Ed even developed an interest in throwing Darts. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church, 900 Jefferson Street, Port Clinton from 9:30am until a memorial service at 10:30am with Pastor Harry Hunt, officiating. A light luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the parish hall. Burial will follow at 2:00pm at Elliston Cemetery in Elliston, Ohio.
