Donald F. Smith

Donald F. Smith, 77, Put-in-Bay, Ohio, died February 11, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was born on October 31, 1929 in Rice Twp., Sandusky County, Ohio. He was a 1947 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He served his country as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was an active member of the American Legion Post #542, Put-in-Bay. He served as president for both the Fremont Ross High School Booster Club and the St. Joseph Central Catholic Booster Club. He also served as president of the Fremont Rotary Club. He spent most of his working life as a Pontiac- Cadillac automobile dealer in Fremont, Ohio. He left the automotive industry in 1983 and came to work at the Oakland Pontiac International Airport, first for Aviation Group, Inc., followed by Corporate Flight, Inc., as a part owner. Don specialized in aircraft sales, leases and management contracts for corporate aircraft. Later in life, he enjoyed volunteering at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Over the last ten years, Don enjoyed his retirement on the island of Put-in-Bay, doing the things he enjoyed most: boating, traveling, being with friends and family, especially while cheering the Buckeyes, and his Wednesday evening poker parties. Don is survived by his beloved wife of nearly fifty years, Marilyn A. Smith; his sons, Michael J. (Laureen) Smith of Clarkston, MI, and Stephen P. Smith of Port Clinton, OH; and grandchildren, Brittany Smith and Geoffrey Smith of Clarkston, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Mable Smith of Fremont, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, from 1:00 P.M. until time of services at 3:00 P.M. at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton St., Port Clinton, Ohio.
